How to switch a page using the parent theme to a child theme? Image

So, you’ve accidentally created a page, or, let’s be honest, your entire website, using templates from the Parent theme. No judgment. Happens to the best of us. But here’s the good news: switching over to your Child theme is a breeze. Seriously, even your cat could do it (if it cared about web design).

Why bother? Oh, the benefits are glorious. Think of a Child Theme as the customizable sequel to your Parent theme. Same foundation, but way cooler and infinitely more you. Now let’s get you switched over.

Step 1: Create a Child Theme

If you haven’t done this yet, no worries. It’s super simple. Just follow the steps and video right here. Already got a Child Theme? Fantastic. Gold star for you. Let’s move on.

Step 2: Dial In Your Theme Settings

Each Child Theme has its own theme settings (basically the global style sheet for your website). If you’re setting up your Child Theme for the first time—or if it’s been gathering dust for months—it’s time to give it some love.

Here’s how:

  1. Create a brand-new page in the HubSpot Content Hub.
  2. Select your Child Theme to find a template.
  3. Look for the Style Guide template (trust me, it’s a lifesaver).
  4. Click the Edit dropdown at the top of the screen then Theme: Name of your child theme

Once your settings are polished and pretty, you’re ready for the next step.

Step 3: Convert Each Page to Your Child Theme

This is where the magic happens.

  1. Open a page you want to convert and click the Settings tab at the top right.
  2. Find the Template section. Take note of the current template name (you’ll need it in a sec).
  3. Click the Use Different Template button. HubSpot will politely ask you to select a theme—choose your Child Theme.
  4. In the search bar, type the name of the template file you’re looking for.

Boom, there’s your template.

Now, you’ll enter Preview Mode, where you can see your existing content beautifully layered onto the new template.

If everything looks good—and it will—click the Use Template button in the top-right corner.

Easy, right? You’re basically a web-design ninja now.

Step 4: Rinse and Repeat

Yes, you’ll need to repeat Step 3 for every page still clinging to the Parent theme. Yes, it’s a little tedious. But future you will thank current you with a heartfelt high-five.

And there you have it, website perfection, one page at a time. Now go grab a coffee or a celebratory beverage of your choice. You’ve earned it.
